Archival Overview
Distinguished Tunisian painter and foundational figure of the École de Tunis whose exquisite miniatures and portraits captured the quiet elegance, light, and architectural enchantment of Sidi Bou Said.
Biographical Record
Growing up in the Medina of Tunis and later settling in the cliffside village of Sidi Bou Said, Jellal Ben Abdallah pioneered a distinctive style blending Ottoman-Arab miniature traditions, Byzantine iconography, and delicate Mediterranean pastels.
Ben Abdallah designed theatre sets, national postage stamps, and interior frescoes alongside his easel paintings. His serene depictions of cloistered courtyards, traditional women in silk robes, and coastal horizons became iconic symbols of Tunisian cultural grace.
