Archival Overview
Astonishing blind Canadian blues-rock guitarist whose signature lap-style playing style and Grammy-nominated hit "Angel Eyes" captivated worldwide audiences.
Biographical Record
Norman Jeffrey Healey lost his sight at eight months old to retinoblastoma. Teaching himself guitar by laying the instrument flat across his lap and fretting with all five fingers from above, Healey developed an extraordinary technique with volcanic bending, vibrato, and blazing speed.
His 1988 debut album with the Jeff Healey Band, See the Light, featured the international multi-platinum hit "Angel Eyes." Healey shared stages with Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, and George Harrison, and co-starred in the cult film Road House. A passionate collector of 1920s jazz 78s, he hosted CBC Radio's My Kind of Jazz.
