Archival Overview
Legendary French actress, director, and singer whose husky voice, sensual intelligence, and iconic roles in Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud and François Truffaut's Jules et Jim made her the definitive muse of the French New Wave.
Biographical Record
Trained at the Paris Conservatoire and entering the Comédie-Française at age twenty, Moreau broke from classical theater into modern cinema. In 1958, Louis Malle filmed her walking down the Champs-Élysées at night under natural streetlights to Miles Davis's improvised trumpet in Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.
In François Truffaut's Jules et Jim (1962), her magnetic performance as the free-spirited Catherine and her singing of 'Le Tourbillon de la vie' captivated audiences worldwide. She worked with Orson Welles (who called her 'the greatest actress in the world'), Michelangelo Antonioni, and Luis Buñuel.
