"To build a country requires not only courage with the sword, but wisdom in planting seeds and raising homes."

Archival Overview

Visionary first Intendant of New France who conducted the first census in North America (1666), stimulated population growth through the Filles du Roy, and founded domestic industries.

Biographical Record

Dispatched by Louis XIV and finance minister Colbert in 1665, Talon revolutionized the administrative and economic structures of New France. In 1666, he personally conducted North America's first systematic census, recording 3,215 French inhabitants.

Talon introduced timber exports, shipyards, weaving looms, tanneries, and Canada's first commercial brewery in Quebec. By organizing land grants to soldiers of the Carignan-Salières regiment and welcoming the Filles du Roy, he transformed a struggling fur post into a thriving settler society.
