Biographical Record
Jean Sénac was born to a poor single mother in the fishing port of Béni Saf. Identifying passionately with the oppressed Algerian majority, he became a close friend of Albert Camus and René Char before breaking with Camus over the latter's hesitation regarding Algerian independence.
Sénac joined the FLN, publishing fiery patriotic poems celebrating the ALN freedom fighters and brotherhood. In independent Algiers, he founded the Union of Algerian Writers and hosted popular cultural radio programs championing young, marginalized poets, until his tragic unsolved murder in 1973.
