Cult French film director, screenwriter, and novelist renowned as a pioneer of poetic European fantastique cinema and atmospheric vampire films.
Biographical Record
Jean Michel Rollin was exposed to the surrealist avant-garde in Paris through his mother's friendship with figures like Jean Cocteau and Maurice Leroux. In 1968, amidst the Paris student uprisings, he released 'Le Viol du vampire', the first French vampire feature film.
Rollin forged a highly personal cinematic universe characterized by deserted French beaches, crumbling châteaux, gothic romanticism, and poetic melancholia in works like 'La Rose de fer' (1973) and 'Fascination' (1979). Today, his films are celebrated internationally as masterpieces of idiosyncratic European cult art.
