Jean Prat (1923–2005), bestowed the reverent moniker Monsieur Rugby by the English press, was the founding giant of modern French rugby. Leading the dominant FC Lourdes team to six French championships, Prat was a brilliant flanker, peerless tackler, and lethal goal-kicker with both feet.

Prat earned 51 caps for France (a record for his time), captaining the Tricolores to their first-ever Five Nations Championship title in 1954 and leading France to their historic first-ever Test victory over the All Blacks at Colombes in 1954.
