Archival Overview
Internationally renowned abstract expressionist painter whose vibrant, mosaic-like canvases applied with a palette knife established him alongside Pollock and de Kooning as a titan of post-war art.
Biographical Record
A student of Borduas, Riopelle signed the Refus Global manifesto in 1948 before moving to Paris, where he was embraced by André Breton and the international surrealists. He pioneered a distinctive technique using palette knives and trowels to sculpt gleaming slabs of oil paint into volcanic mosaics.
Riopelle represented Canada at the 1962 Venice Biennale, winning the UNESCO Prize, and lived for decades with American painter Joan Mitchell. His monumental 1992 narrative fresco, Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg (forty meters long), is permanently enshrined at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
