Archival Overview

Premier of Quebec whose transformative government launched the Quiet Revolution under the rallying cry 'Maîtres chez nous' (Masters in our own house).

Biographical Record

Jean Lesage was born in Montreal and educated in law at Laval University. Serving in federal politics as cabinet minister under Louis St. Laurent, he took the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party in 1958, winning the historic June 1960 provincial election that ended the Duplessis era.

Lesage's administration enacted the Révolution tranquille (Quiet Revolution), modernizing Quebec at lightning speed. He secularized education by creating the Ministry of Education, nationalized private electric companies to form Hydro-Québec under the motto 'Maîtres chez nous', established the Caisse de dépôt et placement, and modernized civil society, transforming Quebec into a dynamic modern democracy.
