Biographical Record
Jean Genet was a literary giant of the 20th century whose plays (The Balcony, The Blacks) revolutionized modern theater. In the 1970s and 1980s, Genet found refuge and brotherhood in Morocco, living with his companion Mohamed El Katrani in Larache.
An uncompromising ally of the oppressed, he championed the Black Panthers and the Palestinian cause. Following his death in Paris in April 1986, his body was brought to Morocco in accordance with his last wishes and buried in the sun-drenched Spanish cemetery on the Atlantic cliffs of Larache.
