Archival Overview

Leading French alienist, favorite pupil of Philippe Pinel, who succeeded him at the Salpêtrière, distinguished hallucinations from illusions, defined monomania, and drafted France's landmark Lunacy Law of 1838.

Biographical Record

Studying medicine in Toulouse and Montpellier, Esquirol joined Pinel at the Salpêtrière in 1799. He conducted the first comprehensive nationwide survey of French asylum conditions in 1818, revealing horrifying abuses in municipal jails that spurred parliamentary reform.

In his landmark 1838 treatise Des maladies mentales considérées sous les rapports médical, hygiénique et médico-légal, Esquirol established clinical psychiatric nosology, coining 'monomania' and differentiating illusions from true hallucinations. He drafted the historic French Law of June 30, 1838, mandating humane specialized psychiatric hospitals in every French department.
