"Art is the luminous veil of the divine; the painter must open the gates of the soul to eternal beauty."

Archival Overview

Preeminent Belgian Symbolist painter, occultist, and author who led the Idealist movement, founded the Salons d'Art Idéaliste, and painted monumental esoteric masterworks including The School of Plato and The Treasures of Satan.

Biographical Record

Studying at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Delville fell under the sway of Joséphin Péladan's Rose+Croix movement in Paris. Rejecting naturalism and impressionism, he insisted that art must serve as a sacred vehicle for spiritual initiation and hermetic philosophy.

His monumental canvas The School of Plato (1898), displayed in the Musée d'Orsay, depicted ancient Greek youths surrounding Plato in an idealized garden of luminous spiritual purity. He served as professor at the Glasgow School of Art and director of the Académie Royale in Brussels.
