"Bernini gave motion to marble; I brought that living fire home to grace the churches and fountains of the Meuse."

Archival Overview

The undisputed master of Walloon Baroque sculpture, celebrated as 'the Bernini of Liège' for his dynamic religious marbles, ornate fountains, and the iconic Three Graces atop the Liège Perron.

Biographical Record

Delcour traveled to Rome in 1650, spending a decade studying under Gian Lorenzo Bernini and absorbing the emotional intensity and swirling drapery of High Baroque sculpture. Returning to Liège, he became the city's foremost sculptor for forty years.

He decorated Saint Lambert's Cathedral and religious houses throughout Wallonia with dynamic wood and marble figures. In 1696, following the bombardment of Liège by Marshal Boufflers, Delcour sculpted the bronze Three Graces crowning the historic Perron fountain in Place du Marché, the civic emblem of Liège liberties.
