Joseph Jean Arthur Béliveau (1931–2014), admired as Le Gros Bill, was the embodiment of regal dignity, leadership, and silky playmaking grace. Playing 20 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, Béliveau served as captain for a decade (1961–1971).
He won an astonishing 10 Stanley Cup championships as a player (and seven more as an executive, giving him an NHL-record 17 Cups). Béliveau was the inaugural winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1965 and scored 507 career goals.
