Archival Overview

Pioneering pharmacist and foundational statesman who co-founded the PDCI-RDA, organized the historic 1949 Grand-Bassam women's march, and served as Minister of the Interior and Mayor of Grand-Bassam.

Biographical Record

Jean-Baptiste Mockey was born in Grand-Bassam on April 14, 1915. Trained as a pharmacist in Dakar, Mockey established one of the first African-owned pharmacies in Côte d'Ivoire and became an essential organizer for the nascent anti-colonial movement.

Imprisoned by French authorities in Grand-Bassam prison in 1949 alongside other RDA leaders, his incarceration sparked the heroic December 1949 Women's March on Grand-Bassam that forced colonial concessions. Following independence, he served as Vice-Premier, Minister of the Interior, and Mayor of Grand-Bassam.
