Archival Overview
Canadian-born explorer and statesman who accompanied his brother Iberville to the Mississippi Delta, founded New Orleans in 1718, and served four terms as Governor of Louisiana.
Biographical Record
Born in Montreal, Bienville sailed south with his brother Iberville in 1698 to explore the Mississippi. Displaying exceptional diplomatic savvy, he famously tricked an English warship into retreating from the river at the 'English Turn' by bluffing that a large French fleet was anchored nearby.
In 1718, Bienville selected the crescent bend of the Mississippi River to found New Orleans, laying out the historic French Quarter (Vieux Carré). He governed Louisiana through early hurricanes, yellow fever, and colonial wars, retiring to Paris as an elder statesman of the French empire.
