Archival Overview
World-renowned jazz giant from the working-class Marolles district of Brussels who elevated the chromatic harmonica into a premier jazz solo instrument, composed Bluesette, and performed with Charlie Parker and Quincy Jones.
Biographical Record
Self-taught on the chromatic harmonica, Thielemans performed with Benny Goodman on his 1950 European tour before emigrating to the United States in 1952, joining Charlie Parker and George Shearing's quintet. In 1962, he composed the immortal jazz waltz Bluesette, whistling and playing guitar in unison.
His unmistakable, tender harmonica sound graced historic film soundtracks including Midnight Cowboy, The Getaway, and Sesame Street's iconic theme song. Quincy Jones declared: 'Toots is one of the greatest jazz musicians who ever lived.' Created a baron by King Albert II, he performed well into his nineties.
