Tibetan religious reformer, philosopher, and founder of the Gelug school—the tradition of the Dalai Lamas. Authored the Lamrim Chenmo (The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment), unifying monastic discipline and Madhyamaka logic.

Biographical Record

Hailing from the Tsongkha region of Amdo, he took monastic vows as a boy and traveled to central Tibet, studying with masters of all major traditions (Sakya, Kagyu, Kadam). Troubled by moral laxity and esoteric abuses, he instituted sweeping reforms emphasizing monastic celibacy and rigorous dialectics.

In 1409, he established the annual Great Prayer Festival (Monlam Chenmo) in Lhasa and founded Ganden Monastery. His scholastic synthesis of Nagarjuna's Prasangika-Madhyamaka philosophy remains the intellectual foundation of Tibetan Buddhism.
