Notice / Correction
"The bodily afflictions of men became in him a spiritual pain, more grievous than his own; for it is the suffering of the people that causes the agony of kings, not their own grief."

Archival Overview

Greatest sovereign of the Khmer Empire. Liberated the kingdom from Cham invaders, constructed the fortified royal city of Angkor Thom with the enigmatic multi-faced stone towers of the Bayon, and established a nationwide network of 102 free public hospitals.

Biographical Record

Embracing Mahayana Buddhism after the devastation of Angkor by Cham raiders, Jayavarman VII channeled divine compassion (Karuna) into massive civic works. He built the Bayon temple, whose 216 giant smiling stone faces of Avalokiteshvara gaze peacefully over the realm.

He constructed over 120 rest houses along royal highways, reservoir reservoirs, and public hospitals (Arogyasala), carving on stelae that his own people's suffering was his supreme imperial sorrow.
