Biographical Record
Originally a freedman from Sicily, Jawhar entered the service of Fatimid Caliph Al-Mansur and rose to become Commander-in-Chief under Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah. In 969 CE, he led a swift, disciplined conquest of Ikhshidid Egypt without sacking the population.
Immediately following his triumph, Jawhar laid the boundary stones of a grand new imperial capital, naming it Al-Qahirah (The Victorious), and founded Al-Azhar Mosque, which grew into the premier center of Islamic scholarship in the world.
