Archival Overview
Hellenistic Jewish historian of Cyrene who composed the monumental five-volume Greek history of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire, the primary source for the biblical Second Book of Maccabees.
Biographical Record
Jason of Cyrene belonged to the thriving, cultured Jewish community of the Libyan Pentapolis in eastern Cyrenaica. Writing in sophisticated Hellenistic Greek, he chronicled Judas Maccabaeus's uprising against Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
His five-volume historical work, though lost in its original form, was abridged by an anonymous epitomist into the canonical Second Book of Maccabees, immortalizing the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem and the festival of Hanukkah.
