Archival Overview
Beloved poet revered as the 'Polli Kobi' (Pastoral Poet) of Bengal whose folk-epic masterpiece 'Nakshi Kanthar Math' ('The Field of the Embroidered Quilt') captured the rustic soul of rural Bengal.
Biographical Record
Jasimuddin was born on January 1, 1903, in Tambulkhana, Faridpur. While still an undergraduate student at Calcutta University, his heartbreaking poem Kabor ('The Grave') was included in school matriculation textbooks—an unprecedented honor for a living young student.
Working as a folklore collector under Dinesh Chandra Sen, Jasimuddin absorbed the ballads, idioms, and rural sorrows of Bengal. In 1929, he published his masterwork, Nakshi Kanthar Math (translated by E.M. Milford as The Field of the Embroidered Quilt), a tragic rural romance between peasant lovers Rupai and Saju. He composed hundreds of immortal Bhatiyali and Murshidi folk songs before his death in 1976.
