Archival Overview
Beloved lyric poet of Prague and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate (1984) who championed artistic freedom, co-founded Poetism, and signed Charter 77 in defiance of totalitarian censorship.
Biographical Record
Jaroslav Seifert was born in the working-class Prague district of Žižkov on September 23, 1901. In the 1920s, he was a leading member of the avant-garde group Devětsil, helping formulate 'Poetism'—a celebration of modern life, circus, film, and lyric playfulness.
Evolving into a deeply moving master of pure lyricism, his collections such as The Casting of Bells and An Umbrella from Piccadilly reflected love for Prague and unwavering defense of human dignity. In 1977, he was among the first signatories of Charter 77; in 1984, he became the first Czech author awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
