"To corner faster, you must move your center of mass inside the turn; the machine obeys gravity, not tradition."

Archival Overview

Finnish motorcycle Grand Prix World Champion nicknamed 'The Flying Finn', who revolutionized motorcycle road racing by pioneering the knee-down 'hang-off' cornering style that became the universal modern riding technique.

Biographical Record

Jarno Saarinen (1945–1973) held an engineering degree and prepared his own two-stroke Yamaha motorcycles, studying cornering physics on frozen ice tracks in Finland. To increase cornering velocity, he dropped his knee towards the tarmac and leaned his body radically off the bike, startling competitors.

In 1972, Saarinen won the 250cc World Championship and in 1973 became the first European to win the prestigious Daytona 200 in Florida. Entering the 500cc class in 1973, he won his first two races, leading the championship until a tragic multi-rider crash at Monza took his life and that of Renzo Pasolini.
