Archival Overview
Revered elder statesman known as 'Jaramogi', first Vice-President of independent Kenya, author of 'Not Yet Uhuru', and stalwart leader of the multi-party democracy movement.
Biographical Record
Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga was born around October 1911 in Bondo, Siaya. Educated at Makerere College in Uganda, he worked as a mathematics teacher before founding the Luo Thrift and Trading Corporation in 1947 to foster indigenous commercial self-reliance.
Elected to the Legislative Council in 1957, Odinga stunned colonial authorities by demanding the unconditional release of Jomo Kenyatta. Serving as independent Kenya's first Vice-President, he broke with Kenyatta in 1966 over land redistribution and capitalist policies, founding the Kenya People's Union (KPU) and authoring the classic political autobiography Not Yet Uhuru. In the 1990s, he led the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD), successfully re-establishing multi-party democracy.
