Archival Overview

Eminent 3rd-century Numidian bishop of the Roman legionary city of Lambaesis who stood alongside Saint Cyprian at the historic Council of Carthage.

Biographical Record

Januarius served as the Christian shepherd of Lambaesis, the headquarters of the Legio III Augusta in the Aurès foothills of eastern Algeria. Under his leadership, the Christian community flourished despite imperial surveillance and legionary pagan shrines.

At the Seventh Council of Carthage in September 256 CE, Bishop Januarius cast one of the earliest votes, advocating African ecclesiastical autonomy and firm moral discipline for those who lapsed during Decian persecution trials.
