Archival Overview

Pioneering Belgian female Surrealist painter who co-founded the literary revue Temps Mêlés and painted the iconic group portrait La Goutte d'eau (The Drop of Water) commemorating the Belgian Surrealist circle.

Biographical Record

Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Graverol broke away from conventional figurative painting after discovering Surrealism during World War II. In 1949, she met René Magritte and Louis Scutenaire, becoming a central figure in Belgian surrealist exhibitions.

Her celebrated 1964 masterwork La Goutte d'eau depicted all major figures of the Belgian Surrealist movement (including Magritte, Mesens, Nougé, Mariën, and Scutenaire) sailing inside an enormous suspended water droplet. She later lived with French poet Gaston Puel.
