Archival Overview

Master of the Flemish Baroque known as 'Velvet Brueghel' for his exquisite miniature brushwork, lush floral still lifes, paradise landscapes, and fruitful collaborations with Peter Paul Rubens.

Biographical Record

Second son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan trained in Antwerp and traveled through Italy (1590–1596), where he forged friendships with Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Returning to Antwerp, he was elected dean of the Guild of Saint Luke and appointed court painter to Archdukes Albert and Isabella.

Brueghel perfected dynamic miniature paintings on copper and collaborated closely with his close friend Peter Paul Rubens, executing lush flora, fauna, and landscapes while Rubens painted heroic figures in works such as The Allegory of the Senses.
