Visionary Iraqi intellectual, poet, and philosopher who was among the earliest Arab advocates for women's suffrage and the unveiling of women.
Biographical Record
Jamil Sidqi al-Zahawi was one of the most daring and iconoclastic thinkers of the modern Middle East. Born in Baghdad to an intellectual Kurdish family, he mastered physics, astronomy, and Arabic literature, publishing treatises on gravitation and celestial mechanics alongside philosophical poetry.
In 1910, Zahawi ignited widespread intellectual debate by publishing his landmark article 'Women in Society', demanding absolute legal and social equality for women, freedom from compulsory veiling, and equal access to higher education. Despite death threats and removal from his teaching post, he stood steadfast, later serving in the Iraqi Senate and mentoring generation of modern thinkers.
