"Discipline of the fingers is meaningless without devotion of the spirit; the instrument will only yield its secrets to patient love."

Archival Overview

Virtuoso Iraqi oud master and violinist, elder brother of Munir Bashir, author of foundational method manuals for the Arabic oud.

Biographical Record

Jamil Bashir was born in Mosul to a musical Syriac family and displayed dazzling virtuosity on both the oud and the violin from childhood. He graduated with top honors from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad under Sharif Muhiddin Haydar and was immediately appointed professor of oud and violin.

Bashir authored the definitive two-volume pedagogical method Al-Ud wa-Tariqat Tadrisihi, which remains the standard conservatory curriculum for oud students across the Arab world. His dazzling plectrum technique, expressive violin phrasing in Iraqi radio orchestras, and compositions enriched the classical Mesopotamian musical canon.
