Archival Overview
Almonte, Ontario-born educator and doctor who invented basketball in December 1891 with two peach baskets and thirteen fundamental rules.
Biographical Record
James Naismith was an orphan from Almonte, Ontario, who earned degrees in physical education and theology from McGill University, where he was a champion rugby and lacrosse athlete. In December 1891, while teaching at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith was challenged to create an indoor game to occupy students during harsh New England winters.
Nailing two peach baskets to the gymnasium balcony railings ten feet high, Naismith drafted thirteen rules emphasizing ball movement, passing, and finesse over physical contact. Basketball exploded into one of the most popular sports on earth. In 1936, Naismith tossed the ceremonial tip-off at the Berlin Olympics as basketball became an official Olympic sport.
