Archival Overview

Legendary satirist, publicist, and playwright who founded the revolutionary illustrated satirical journal 'Molla Nasreddin' in 1906, fighting religious superstition and advocating female liberation.

Biographical Record

Jalil Mammadguluzadeh was born on February 22, 1869, in Nakhchivan. Graduating from the Gori Teachers' Seminary in Georgia, he worked as a rural schoolmaster before settling in Tiflis. In April 1906, he founded the iconic satirical periodical Molla Nasreddin.

Featuring biting cartoons and razor-sharp satire in vernacular Azerbaijani, Molla Nasreddin achieved legendary influence throughout Transcaucasia, Iran, Turkey, and Central Asia, relentlessly satirizing despotic shahs, corrupt clerics, and the subjugation of Muslim women. His masterpiece plays The Dead (Ölülər, 1909) and The Assembly of Madmen established him as a giant of social critique.
