"Justice is the foundation of kingdom; a sovereign who sleeps while his people are oppressed deserves no crown."

Archival Overview

Fourth Mughal Emperor who patronized the golden age of Mughal miniature painting, established the 'Chain of Justice' (Zanjir-i Adl) at Agra, and recorded acute natural history observations in Jahangirnama.

Biographical Record

Nur al-Din Muhammad Jahangir (1569–1627), born Prince Salim to Emperor Akbar and Mariam-uz-Zamani, ascended the Mughal throne in 1605. He hung a golden 'Chain of Justice' with sixty bells connecting his palace bedroom to the bank of the Yamuna River, allowing any humble citizen to ring for royal redress.

Jahangir was an exceptional naturalist and connoisseur of painting, commissioning master painters like Mansur to depict exotic animals, birds, and flowers with scientific realism. In his later years, his brilliant wife Empress Nur Jahan exercised de facto imperial co-rule.
