Archival Overview
Annaba-born European Algerian trade unionist who joined the armed struggle with the Combattants de la Libération, survived brutal torture, and remained an Algerian patriot.
Biographical Record
Jacques Salort was born in Annaba into a modest European working-class family and worked as a civil servant in Algiers. Rejecting colonial racism, he joined the Algerian Communist Party (PCA) and the General Union of Algerian Syndicates (CGTA) to organize integrated strikes.
In 1956, he entered the armed resistance in the clandestine Combattants de la Libération network. Arrested and savagely tortured by paratroopers in the Villa Sésini, he survived years of harsh imprisonment, joyfully choosing Algerian citizenship in 1962 and serving the independent nation until his death in 2005.
