Biographical Record
Growing up in Paris and participating in the early Surrealist group, Prévert broke away to create a direct, conversational street poetry accessible to ordinary workers and schoolchildren, combining gentle tenderness with ferocious anti-militarist satire.
His partnership with director Marcel Carné produced the crowning glories of French poetic realism cinema: Quai des brumes (1938), Le Jour se lève (1939), and the monumental Les Enfants du paradis (Children of Paradise, 1945), voted the greatest French film of the century. His song Les Feuilles mortes, set to music by Joseph Kosma, conquered the world.
