Joseph Jacques Omer Plante (1929–1986) was one of the most innovative and influential figures in the history of ice hockey. Backstopping the Montreal Canadiens dynasty to five consecutive Stanley Cups from 1956 to 1960, Plante won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender seven times.

On November 1, 1959, after taking a puck to the face at Madison Square Garden, Plante refused to return to the ice without his fiberglass practice mask, defying coach Toe Blake and forever changing goaltending safety worldwide.
