Archival Overview
French painter who spent forty years in Marrakech, documenting Atlas Kasbahs and Berber life, creator of the world-famous Majorelle Garden and the cobalt 'Majorelle Blue' (Bleu Majorelle).
Biographical Record
Jacques Majorelle was the son of celebrated Art Nouveau furniture designer Louis Majorelle. Arriving in Morocco in 1917, he fell in love with Marrakech and the High Atlas, acquiring land outside the medina in 1923 to build a cubist villa and studio.
Over forty years, he designed the iconic Jardin Majorelle, assembling an exotic botanical oasis of cacti, palms, and lotus pools framed in an intense, patented cobalt blue ('Bleu Majorelle'). Later saved and restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the garden remains Morocco's most visited cultural monument.
