"In the arts the way in which an idea is rendered, and the manner in which it is expressed, is much more important than the idea itself."

Archival Overview

Preeminent painter of the Neoclassical era and official artist of the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Biographical Record

Jacques-Louis David was the undisputed dictator of the arts in France during the tumultuous decades spanning the Ancien Régime, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Empire. Developing a pristine, austere Neoclassical style inspired by ancient Roman civic virtue, David banished the frivolous Rococo style.

His patriotic manifesto Oath of the Horatii (1784) ignited revolutionary fervor. As an active Jacobin deputy and artistic organizer during the Terror, he painted the secular martyr portrait The Death of Marat (1793). Later, as First Painter to Emperor Napoleon, he produced monumental state spectacles like The Coronation of Napoleon and the romantic equestrian icon Napoleon Crossing the Alps.
