Archival Overview

Preeminent Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer whose mastery of cantus firmus structural design and expressive melodic lyricism placed him alongside Josquin des Prez as the pinnacle of late medieval counterpoint.

Biographical Record

Son of a Ghent city trumpeter, Obrecht served as choirmaster at Cambrai Cathedral, Saint Donatian's in Bruges, and Antwerp Cathedral. He was acclaimed across Europe for his phenomenal facility, famously able to compose an entire mass overnight.

His monumental masses, such as Missa Sub tuum praesidium and Missa Maria zart, showcased brilliant structural symmetry and rhythmic momentum. Recruited to the court of Duke Ercole I d'Este in Ferrara in 1504, he died tragically in an outbreak of the plague the following year.
