Archival Overview
One of the triumvirate of Flemish Baroque painting alongside Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, celebrated for boisterous peasant feasts, monumental mythological canvases, and vibrant biblical scenes.
Biographical Record
Apprenticed to Adam van Noort in Antwerp, Jordaens was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1615 and became its dean in 1621. Unlike Rubens and Van Dyck, he never traveled to Italy, cultivating a distinct, robustly Flemish idiom characterized by warm, exuberant realism.
His famous masterpieces including The King Drinks (Twelfth Night banquet) and As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young captured Flemish communal joy with unmatched vivacity. He completed prestigious international commissions including the decoration of the Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague.
