Biographical Record
John Hamilton "Jack" Bush was a pivotal figure in Canadian post-painterly abstraction. Working by day as a commercial advertising illustrator in Toronto, Bush was a founding member of Painters Eleven in 1953, the collective that introduced abstract expressionism to English Canada.
Encouraged by influential American critic Clement Greenberg to simplify his compositions and paint his feelings with uninhibited color, Bush developed iconic motifs: brilliant ribbons, sashes, and thrusting chevrons of pure hue floating on raw or muted grounds. His works entered premier collections worldwide, including the Tate Modern, MoMA, and the National Gallery of Canada.
