Biographical Record
Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (c. 721–815 CE), known to medieval Europe as Geber, practiced chemistry in Kufa under the patronage of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid and the Barmakid viziers. He insisted that true chemical understanding must be rooted in rigorous experimental laboratory work (*al-amal*).
Jabir invented laboratory distillation apparatus such as the alembic (*al-inbiq*), and pioneered basic chemical processes including crystallization, calcination, sublimation, and evaporation. He was the first to synthesize hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and aqua regia (capable of dissolving gold), laying the foundations for modern chemical laboratory practice.
