Biographical Record
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was an Armenian-Russian Romantic painter widely considered one of the greatest marine artists in world history. Born Hovhannes Aivazian to an Armenian family in the Crimean seaport of Feodosia, he had an uncanny visual memory that enabled him to paint crashing ocean waves and changing sea light entirely in the studio without models.
Appointed official painter of the Russian Imperial Navy, Aivazovsky produced more than 6,000 paintings. His crowning masterpiece, The Ninth Wave (1850), depicting shipwreck survivors clinging to a mast in a glowing sunrise, is renowned for its miraculous luminosity and translucent green water. J.M.W. Turner was so moved by Aivazovsky's wave painting that he dedicated an Italian poem to him.
