Archival Overview
Undisputed monarch of Egyptian slapstick comedy and monologist whose unmistakable wide-mouthed facial expressions, physical humor, and dedicated film series dominated Arab cinema for three decades.
Biographical Record
Overcoming severe poverty and family bankruptcy in Suez, Ismail Yassine arrived in Cairo penniless, performing comic musical monologues in Badia Masabni's nightclub. In 1939, director Fouad El-Gazaerli cast him in films, beginning a meteoric ascent to the summit of Arab box-office comedy.
He achieved the unprecedented Hollywood-style honor of starring in a series of blockbuster films bearing his own name, including *Ismail Yassine in the Army*, *Ismail Yassine in the Navy*, and *Ismail Yassine in the Madhouse*, appearing in over 200 films and founding his own comedic theater troupe that toured the Arab world.
