Archival Overview
The founding father of modern Tunisian Bedouin folk music who elevated traditional desert song (ghina badawi), gasba flute, and guellal percussion onto major international concert stages.
Biographical Record
Ismail Hattab was born in the steppe region of southern Tunisia and immersed himself in ancestral desert vocal traditions. In the 1960s, defying elitist cultural prejudices that marginalized nomadic folklore, he founded his famous folk ensemble.
Hattab's powerful acoustic performances—featuring the haunting wooden gasba, galloping guellal drums, and dramatic vocal melismas—toured across Europe, Africa, and North America, revolutionizing Tunisian pride in its Bedouin heritage.
