Archival Overview

Master architect and chief engineer under Hammuda Pasha Bey who designed the grand ceremonial halls, carved plasterwork, and Italian marble courtyards of the Bardo Palace (now the Bardo National Museum).

Biographical Record

Ismail Daoud was the supreme master builder (Amin al-Bannain) of Tunis during the architectural revival of Hammuda Pasha Bey. Tasked with expanding the Bardo royal residence into an imperial palace complex, Daoud combined Andalusian carved stucco (Naqsh Hadida) with Carrara marble colonnades and Ottoman ceramic tilework.

His grand hall of justice and palatial reception rooms became the architectural masterpiece that today houses the world-famous Bardo National Museum.
