Archival Overview
Supreme chieftain of the Awraba Berber confederation at Volubilis who welcomed the fugitive Idris I in 788 AD, pledged allegiance (Bay'ah), and co-founded the Moroccan state.
Biographical Record
Ishaq ibn Muhammad al-Awrabi was the paramount leader of the powerful Awraba Amazigh tribe centered at the Roman-Berber city of Walili (Volubilis). In 788 AD, when Moulay Idris I arrived in Morocco fleeing the Abbasid massacre of Fakhkh near Mecca, Ishaq received him with royal Maghrebi hospitality.
Recognizing Idris's noble lineage, piety, and leadership, Ishaq summoned the tribal chiefs and swore the historic oath of fealty (Bay'ah) to him in February 789. By giving his daughter Kenza al-Awrabiya in marriage to Idris, Ishaq forged the foundational Arab-Berber union that birthed the first unified Moroccan Islamic monarchy.
