Archival Overview
Pioneering 9th-century Baghdad-trained physician in Kairouan who authored the world's first clinical psychiatric treatise on depression, Maqala fi al-Malikhuliya (Treatise on Melancholy).
Biographical Record
Invited from Baghdad to Kairouan by Aghlabid Emir Ibrahim II around 880 CE, Ishaq ibn Imran established the first rigorous clinical medical academy in Ifriqiya, training the next generation of physicians, including Ibn al-Jazzar. He authored foundational works on pharmacology, pulse diagnostics, and poisons.
His medical masterpiece *Maqala fi al-Malikhuliya* pioneered the clinical analysis of depressive disorders, describing both biological and psychological causes and prescribing diet, exercise, music therapy, and psychotherapy. When he refused to rubber-stamp the political murders of erratic Emir Ziyadat Allah III, he was tragically executed in 907 CE.
