Archival Overview
The final reigning Almoravid Sultan who led the desperate last stand within the stone fortress Ksar al-Hajar during the fall of Marrakech in April 1147.
Biographical Record
Ishaq ibn Ali was the youngest son of Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf. Elevated to the sultanate in 1146 to succeed his nephew Ibrahim, he took command of the imperial citadel of Ksar al-Hajar in the heart of Marrakech during the catastrophic final siege by Almohad armies.
Ishaq refused all terms of dishonorable surrender, barricading the royal family within the citadel. When the fortress fell in April 1147, Ishaq was executed by order of Abd al-Mu'min, closing the ninety-year epoch of the great veiled Sanhaja dynasty that founded Marrakech and saved Islamic Andalusia.
