Biographical Record
Ishaq al-Mawsili was the preeminent musician, composer, and theorist of the Abbasid Golden Age. Born to the celebrated court musician Ibrahim al-Mawsili, he received an extensive education in hadith, jurisprudence, Arabic philology, and musical theory. Appointed chief musician under Caliph Harun al-Rashid and his successors, Ishaq systematized the modes of classical Arabic music, composing hundreds of melodies and establishing rigorous standards for performance and improvisation.
His musical treatises, heavily cited by later encyclopedists such as Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani in the Kitab al-Aghani, laid the foundational groundwork for Arabic musicology. Ishaq defended classical musical values against modernistic tendencies and mentored a generation of virtuosos, leaving an enduring legacy as the intellectual father of classical Arab court music.
